Why belong to the Association of Women in Communications?
We support women in communications fields. AWCs
supporting role in your communications career starts with getting you together
with others who can teach you, learn from you, share new career opportunities
with you. We introduce you to Tulsas professional communicators.
Our members are marketing directors, public relations professionals, writers,
broadcasters, speakers, professional women who represent their own businesses
or someone else's; everyone who gets the word out and everyone who helps do it.
Membership encompasses all fields of contemporary communications and this diversity
provides the opportunity to learn about various communications careers through
networking and professional development programs and materials. We
support students of communications. AWC gives our student members a look at
how the working world works with our Mentor/Shadow Day program. We sponsor students
at our luncheon meetings, and they get to work with one of our members for a day
in their professional environment. Visit our Student
Chapter for more information. We bring outstanding speakers each
month on topics relevant to communications issues. Our speakers are tops in
marketing, advertising, writing, broadcasting, journalism, and community leadership.
At our general membership luncheons each month you can learn new topics, network
with other professionals, have a good laugh, be inspired, and be refreshed. Visit
our Programs section
to learn more. We reach out to the community with communications
events. Throughout the year, AWC sponsors these events:
- Girls
Unlimited - a program of Resonance that is a program camp for girls in
grades five through nine that helps develop leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Holiday
Gifts for Needy Tulsans - AWC purchases and personally wraps holiday gifts
for a needy sector of the Tulsa community.
- Media
Workshop - a
workshop providing skills relating to accessing and working with the local media.
Celebrity guest speakers and professionals address the attendees. The non-profit
organizations are the targeted audience.
- Media
Directory - complied and produced annually for the Tulsa community to
have current contact information regarding the local and regional media.
- Student
Chapters - students from TU and OSU participate with our professional
group. Networking, internships, and job searches are outcomes of these affiliations.
Student members can compete for a scholarship
awarded annually from our Tulsa Chapter.
We Support Issues
Affecting Women in the Workplace. AWC is dedicated to issues of importance
to todays woman. This organization was at the forefront of efforts
to enact ERA, and we retain our commitment to its passage. Through lobbying
and activities with coalitions, AWC works to bring favorable resolution
to issues of national importance that impede our progresssuch as
pay equity, equal rights protection, adequate provision for family and
medical leave, child care, and more. These efforts can and do make a difference
in the quality of our lives. Every AWC member increases our credibility
and impact numbers matter to those who govern the nation.
