“Newsmakers: Shaping Our Legacy ”

The Tulsa Chapter of Association for Women in Communications (AWC) will honor four visionary women on Tuesday, May 11 for their outstanding achievements.

Receiving the Newsmakers Awards this year are Margarita Vega-Trivino, Paula Marshall, Judy Eason McIntyre and Teresa Valero.

The Newsmaker Award, presented annually for 40 years, honors women who have been in the news in the past year and who have worked for the advancement of women. The Saidie is a lifetime achievement award for a communications professional, named for the late Saidie Adwon, a noted broadcasting pioneer.

These visionary women will receive their awards at the Mayo Hotel during the Newsmakers Luncheon, annually a premiere Tulsa event. Contact Melani Hamilton or Martha Cantrell to purchase tickets and for additional information.

Margarita Vega-Trivino, president Zapata Multi-Media: Hispano de Tulsa bilingual newspaper; Paginas Hispanas business directory; Marketing consulting

Born in Chihuahua, México, Margarita migrated to Tulsa in 1987, where she attended Cascia Hall Preparatory School and then the University of Tulsa graduating with a degree in International Studies in 1994.

Margarita is the owner and publisher of Zapata Multi-Media. With her husband, Francisco, they publish Oklahoma’s first Spanish language newspaper, ‘Hispano De Tulsa’, and the first Spanish language business and social information directory, ‘Paginas Hispanas’.

In January 2009 Margarita transitioned Hispano de Tulsa into a bilingual format, in order to serve as the bridge that links the Hispanic community to the others that surround it. She also launched "Tulsa Color," a montly publication about ethnic diversity.

Mother of 3 young daughters, Margarita also serves as a role model to her community. She’s a member of the Tulsa Latina Business Women, helping organize the annual Young Latina and Latino Conference. She serves on the board of the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice, and has served program advisor for the Tulsa City County Library’s Hispanic Resource Center. Margarita also judges the annual Harold Charney Poetry Festival for Children, and led the media committee for the “Stop House Bill 1804” campaign.

 

Judy Eason McIntyre, Senator

Senator Eason McIntyre calls herself Sooner Born, Sooner Bred and says when she dies she'll be Sooner Dead. But until then she is plenty busy. She is a 3 year breast cancer survivor and has served a consecutive 49 years at DHS Child Welfare, the Tulsa School Board and the House of Representatives and was elected to the Oklahoma State Senate in 2004.

Judy is a native Tulsan. She attended and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and received her Bachelor’s and Master of Science Degree in Social Work from the University of Oklahoma.

She holds memberships in the following organizations: Member, Vernon AME Church, 1921 Race Riot Design Committee; the Greenwood Re-Development Authority; Tulsa School Board (served 16 years and was former President, Tulsa School Board for two years) the NAACP; CWA (Communication Workers of America) Local #6086, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She was also an Honorary Chair for the Tulsa Komen Race for the Cure in 2007.

Paula Marshall, CEO Bama Companies, Inc.

Paula learned at an early age that keeping an eye on quality and a focus on the people, would grow her family’s company and maintain the long-established foundation of success. She assumed responsibility for the company in 1984 and under her leadership Bama Companies has expanded to provide a wide variety of frozen desserts and baked goods for fast food and family dining restaurants.

Paula also recognized that giving back to her community and being deeply committed to her employees would carry on the traditions of her heritage. The Bama mission is “People Helping People Be Successful,” and Paula has created loyalty, prosperity and FUN for all of her employees and stakeholders while growing the family business. She has served the Chamber of Commerce in multiple capacities and chaired the Tulsa Chamber in 2001.

Paula received her Bachelor of Science in Business from Oklahoma City University (OCU) in 1982, and her Ph,D. in Commercial Science, from OCU, in 1993.

 

M. Teresa Valero, Applied Professor of Art & Graphic Design at University of Tulsa
M. Teresa Valero, a native of Venezuela, is an Applied Professor of Art, Graphic Design at The University of Tulsa where she is former Director of the School of Art. She is co-founder and Creative Director of Third Floor Design, a student-run design studio that provides high-quality design services for nonprofit organizations in Tulsa and surrounding areas. She is also the Director of the recently created Certificate in Advertising (better known as the Ad Program) which combines both Communication and Art curriculum at TU.

In addition to her teaching duties, she works as a photographer and graphic designer, winning many awards in advertising and design some include the Tulsa Addy Awards, Graphex and Creativity Today. Valero's photographs have been exhibited in seven states and overseas. She is a past president of Art Directors Club of Tulsa and an active member of the Tulsa arts community.

In January 2009 Third Floor received the coveted Eddy award given by the Tulsa Advertising Federation and in May the John L. Everitt Non-Profit Award by the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa. In 2001 she was awarded outstanding teaching award by TU and again in 2003 by the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences at TU. In 2007 Valero received the Pinnacle Award for the Arts and Humanities presented by the Women Foundation and the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women.

She has curated many exhibitions most recently the Little Black Dress: New Takes on a Timeless Classic and Journey to America, a documentary photography show that is housed at YWCA Multi Cultural Center and recently had a second opening at the Williams Company in Tulsa. Journey to America is traveling across Oklahoma.

Valero graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Art History, and later received a master's degree in Art History. She lives in Tulsa with her husband and her son Valerio.
