AWC Tulsa's 2009 Newsmakers
“Newsmakers: Shaping Our Legacy ”
The Tulsa Chapter of Association for Women in Communications (AWC) will honor five visionary women on Tuesday, May 19 for their outstanding achievements.
Receiving the Saidie Award for lifetime achievement will be Glenda Silvey, former television news anchor and current public affairs specialist at OU-Tulsa.
Newsmaker Award winners are Phyllis Dotson, community volunteer; Peggy Helmerich, philanthropist; Sister M.Therese Gottschalk, president and CEO of St. John Health System; and Lee Anne Zeigler, executive director of the Tulsa Foundation for Architecture.
The Newsmaker Award, presented annually for 40 years, honors women who have been in the news in the past year and who have worked for the advancement of women. The Saidie is a lifetime achievement award for a communications professional, named for the late Saidie Adwon, a noted broadcasting pioneer.
These five visionary women will receive their awards at the Southern Hills Country Club during the Newsmakers Luncheon, annually a premiere Tulsa event.
Glenda Silvey, former television news anchor and current public affairs specialist for OU-Tulsa.
A 20-year career at KOTV has made Silvey a household name in the Tulsa community. She received the “Best TV Reporter” award from the Tulsa Chapter of the American Women in Radio and Televi-sion in 2001, and is a past Newsmakers Award recipient. Silvey has been involved in numerous community and state organizations.

Phyllis Dotson, community volunteer
Since her move to Tulsa in 1972, Dotson has sup-ported women’s issues and causes with both her time and money. Her philanthropic nature has benefited many local nonprofits, including Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home, Philbrook Museum of Art, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House and others.

Peggy Helmerich, philanthropist
Helmerich has been a generous and sincere philanthropist in the Tulsa community for decades. She established the Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award, and founded the Peggy V. Helmerich Health Center at Hillcrest. She actively participates in many local charities.

Sister M. Therese Gottschalk, president & CEO, St. John Medical Center
Sister Gottschalk has been president and CEO and a Director of St. John since its incorporation in 1982. In addition, Sister Therese was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Center from 1974 through June 30, 1999, and has been a Director of the Medical Center since 1974.

Lee Anne Zeigler, executive director and CEO, Tulsa Foundation for Architecture
As a female in the male-dominated field of architecture, Zeigler has long been a voice for Tulsa’s historic buildings and landmarks. Zeigler helped lead the restoration and relocation of Tulsa’s Route 66 Meadow Gold sign and fought for the acquisition of the Circle Theater.
